Abstrakt: Abstract: Fingering or the arrangement of the fingers of a figure represented in a painting is usually not of much interest to art historians despite the fact that its interpretation can lead to a better understanding of works of art analysed. In this note the gestures performed by figures in three paintings by Hans von Aachen (Laughing Peasants) and Bartholomeus Spranger (Hercules, Deianira, and Nessus and Hercules and Omphale) are discussed with the help of a book on chirology and chiromancy, published by the English doctor John Bulwer in 1644.
