Abstract: The essay is dedicated to the forgotten Baroque writer of the Theatine order, František Kajetán Netvorský and his manuscript Legatio mortuorum ad vivos. The opening chapter suggests applicability of this source in the history of the Bohemian Theatinians and the history of purgatory perception in the Bohemian Baroque. The contemporary literature on this topic is introduced together with the potentiality to methodologically imitate works by French and Polish historians who are concerned with this issue. Then there is an outline of František Kajetán Netvorský's living conditions and a brief codicological description of his manuscript. There follows a content of Netovorský's book Legatio mortuorum ad vivos, chapter by chapter. The following section comments on research into Netvorský's own perception of the purgatory, the kinds of purgatory punishments, the chances to interfere in the spirits' afterlife fortunes, etc. The closing chapter offers future potentials of Netvorský's manuscript as a source of information on the "social history" of the purgatory. |
