Abstract: In the context of historical approach, it is important to consider change processes of names, that is, the change types of names, too, besides the typology of the formation of names. In my study, I am going to present the historical change typology the creation I mainly based on the characteristics of Hungarian name system, however, I think that it is well applicable for the description of the onomastic system of any language. To prove the universal applicability of the model I used not only Hungarian examples illustrating the change processes but I also considered examples from the English settlement name system. Change typology includes three main change types. 1. As regards complex changes, I discuss the change processes where the semantic and the lexical-morphologic structure of names as well as their denotative meaning are both changed. 2. Changes of meaning include those changes where the denotative meaning of the name changes, however, its form remains the same. 3. Formal changes include such processes where the name form is changed, however, the denotative meaning is not. |
