Abstrakt: Abstract: The genre of carols synthesized folklore with biblical and apocryphal traditions. Such synthesis differs on the levels of the Christian West and the Christian East as well as on the national and regional levels; sometimes, it is fully missing. The study documents (1.) the Christianization of folklore in Silesian and Polish carols, which include also the West-Slavic phenomenon called Marian carols (dedicated to the Virgin Mary); (2.) the resonance of themes of the canonical and non-canonical gospels in Czech carols. While the biblical themes of carols correspond to the culture of the Christian West (Christmas cult of the birth of the Christ Child, the adoration of the Luke’s shepherds as representatives of the God’s people) and the Christian East (the Jordan River and the baptism of Jesus), some themes of apocrypha and legends comprised in carols exceed this confessional limit.
