Abstrakt: In 1967, the South African photographer Ernest Cole published a book of photographs called "House of Bondage," exposing the day-to-day evils of apartheid. He struck the deal in New York City, where he had fled the year before. South Africa banned the book's publication and kept Cole out of the country, forcing him to live in exile for the remainder of his life. (He died of cancer in 1990, at age 49.)
