On Monday night, as the results of Canada's 43rd general election were declared, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party hung on to government, with a diminished minority in Parliament - down to 157 seats from the 177 they held before Canadians voted. The exact numbers will shake out in the days to come, but the prime minister won roughly 33 percent of a national popular vote turnout of 66 percent (less than the second-place Conservatives) - the lowest ever for a government. That means about 4 in 5 Canadians either voted for another party or stayed home. But in Canada, it's the seats that count. And Trudeau has enough to continue to govern. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
