You have to be ready to receive a painting by Frank Auerbach. The receiving takes time - takes place over time. You look at one of his portraits and it's not immediately clear where the eyes are or how the head is oriented in space. Accretions of thick, arbitrarily colored paint, or greasy, inchoate blurs created by repeated erasures, sit beneath a handful of short, clinching notations for jaw, eyes, ear or some other structural particularity.
