As Jackie Lynn, she hits the open road and the back alleys of her mind Haley Fohr is probably best known for the yearning psychedelia she makes as Circuit des Yeux, but when I saw herperform solo under her own name at the Hirshhorn Museum in December, she was up to something even more enchanting and intense. She started off on the floor, seated behind a panel of effects pedals, and began to sing, summoning ribbons of wordless vibrato from the depths of her windpipe. Eventually, she stood up and began walking the perimeter of the room, taking slow steps in bright orange socks, using those elongated vocal trills to create a force field around the audience. In the bracing strangeness of the moment, I was convinced that this was the most powerful singing I'd heard in years, or maybe even in life. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
