The internet has become so much a part of everyday life that there is barely a business in existence that does not have at least some kind of web presence. Encouraged by the belief that the internet can enable them to compete on a more equal footing with their larger rivals, smaller businesses have rushed to go online. Unsurprisingly, all sorts of providers have sprung up to help them do it. Some claim to provide a full service, including mastery of the mysteries of search engine optimisation (see page 4); others cater to the DIY market, offering basic tools for creating a standard website. The result is a lot of confusion and some disgruntlement, as many websites do not perform in the ways expected or promised. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
