Responding to a request from investigating judges, the prosecutor's office in the northern city of Lille said Monday that it had opened a preliminary investigation into allegations that Dominique Strauss-Kahn sexually assaulted a woman at a Washington hotel in 2010 when he was the managing director of the International Monetary Fund. Investigators had requested this month to widen the investigation, which has already resulted in charges against Mr. Strauss-Kahn of ''aggravated procurement in an organized gang,'' the legal term for pimping, over a prostitution ring centered in Lille. His lawyers denied the accusations. After the police review the testimonies gathered by the investigators, the prosecutor will determine whether to open a formal investigation.
