On the morning of my 50th birthday, like a child, I want to hear my parents' voices. I phone their house and their live-in carer answers and puts each of them in turn on the phone to me. Experience has taught me that if I ask my father to get my mother he forgets and I'm left dangling for ages, and my mother is physically unable to fetch him or pass him the phone. I tell my father that it's my birthday and he wishes me many happy returns but is worried he didn't remember, so I reassure him that I will be coming up to London next week and it is all arranged for us to celebrate together.
