At the Alessi Museum in northeastern Italy, there's a foldedup paper place mat that is conserved like a holy relic. It comes from a restaurant on the Amalfi Coast. On it are a series of rapid pencil sketches by designer Philippe Starck for a model that would become one of Alessi's most recognisable products - the Juicy Salif lemon squeezer, with its Flash Gordon retro spaceship look. Inspiration had come to Starck while he munched pizza - and he had sent the sketches to Alessi the next day. "We'd actually asked him to design a tray," laughs Matteo Alessi, who at 31 is the first of the fourth generation of Alessis to join the family-run Italian homeware firm. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
