THE sad affair of Derek Conway is not the first of its kind and will not be the last. Despite all that is said about them, members of the House of Commons are neither subhuman nor superhuman. They are as prone as the rest of us to give in to temptation and more of it comes their way than to the average man or woman in the street. It often actually makes good sense for an MP to employ his wife as his secretary. Conway's downfall came about because he was not strong enough to resist the ever-growing temptation to pick up some of the ever-increasing amounts of easy money sloshing around Westminster. Cameron was right to condemn Conway. It is understandable that Conway and his friends claim he has done nothing wrong. But the public whose money this is are right to say that conduct like this in other organisations would cost them their jobs. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
