Abstrakt: The article reports that the Awakening Councils, the Sunni militias created by U.S. troops in Iraq to battle Sunni insurgents, have come under a fresh round of assassinations and bombings, threatening one of the crucial elements of the military's plan to pacify that country. U.S. officials blamed the group Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia for most of the attacks. The militias receive little or no support from Iraq's Shiite-dominated government.
