SAM RILEY, who burst out of almost nowhere as the star of Control, one of the year's best movies, was wondering a few months ago if he'd ever find work again as an actor. I reminded him of this when I saw him on the set of his new film, a contemporary fantasy thriller shooting in London called Franklyn, with Eva Green playing a mysterious woman. 'I don't take it for granted, because it could all go away as quickly as it arrived,' he said of the heat that has surrounded him since his portrayal of Ian Curtis, the lead singer of late-Seventies Manchester group Joy Division. 'In any case, I was rubbish at folding shirts,' he said of one of the jobs that sustained him during a lean period. Franklyn is based on an original screenplay by first-time feature director Gerald McMorrow, who managed to secure the backing of Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas, as well as the services of actors Ryan Phillippe, Bernard Hill, Art Malik and Richard Coyle -- plus a cracking crew.
