The article examines the role of Buddhist monks in political unrest in Burma. Monks have led large public protests against the country's repressive military government. The monks play a significant part in all aspects of Burmese life, as event the government claims it rules to promote Buddhism, and has attempted to win the monks' support. The violent suppression of the demonstrations and arrests of many monks have destroyed the government's main source among most Burmese. |
