A WAR hero cleared in a £20 million 'show trial' over the abuse of Iraqi prisoners has sensationally quit the Army. Colonel Jorge Mendonca was the most senior soldier in recent history to face a court martial. His ordeal -- a two-year investigation followed by a five-month trial -- triggered angry accusations that the prosecution was politically motivated, brought by a government whose ministers were not 'fit to polish his boots'. After the case against him finally collapsed in February, the 43-year-old infantry commander was assured that, under the 'double jeopardy' principle, he would not face the possibility of internal disciplinary action over the same incident. But the father of two has now learned that he could indeed be the target of a fresh military inquiry, and has decided he cannot continue with his distinguished 25-year career.
