MONTCLAIR, N.J., Aug. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A course track returning to PAINWeek 2018 brings new presentations that will explore the most recent evidence on a range of chronic pain syndromes which commonly present to primary care. The evaluation and management of sacroiliac joint dysfunction is the focus of The Weight of the World, to be presented by Ramon Cuevas-Trisan, MD. The sensitivity and specificity of guided sacroiliac joint injections will be discussed as part of the diagnosis of this musculoskeletal entity. Various therapeutic approaches will be illustrated, including specific physical therapy protocols, physical modalities, manipulation techniques, and interventional therapeutic procedures. Longtime PAINWeek faculty member David Glick, DC, DAIPM, CPE, FASPE, will lead Neck and Upper Extremity Pain Syndromes, an exploration of the many potential underlying causes for chronic pain in this region. Attention will also be given to treatments that may prove helpful for both differentially diagnosing and treating various neck and upper extremity pain syndromes. Michael Bottros, MD, will discuss a neuropathic pain disorder for which the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood in his course How Central is Central Poststroke Pain? The course will review the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and symptoms of CPSP, and will present recent findings that may shed light on future targets for treatment. Dr. Bottros will also present Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, an examination of Graded Motor Imagery (GMI) in the treatment of complex regional pain syndrome. "GMI is a comprehensive program aimed at sequentially activating motor cortical networks of the disordered limb to improve neural reorganization," Dr. Bottros remarked. "It includes phases of progressive sensory-motor restructuring beginning with laterality training, guided imagery, and ultimately leading to mirror therapy." The course track, to be offered on Tuesday, September 4, will conclude with a consideration of the special challenges of multiple comorbidities in the evaluation and treatment of patients with chronic pain.
