EL PASO, Texas, Dec. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The Smoke-Free Paso Del Norte coalition presented their annual Chester L. Bryant Valor Award to the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso (HACEP) for being a champion of health and wellness in their public housing communities. In January 2015, HACEP joined a handful of housing authorities across the country when they rolled out a smoke-free policy which will eradicate smoking from all their resident living and common areas. In early November, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) came out in support of a ban on lit tobacco products — cigarettes, cigars and pipes — from all living units, indoor common areas, administrative offices and anywhere outdoors within 25 feet of housing and administrative buildings. HACEP recognized early on, though, the intrinsic health, safety and financial benefits of this now proposed HUD rule.
