Abstrakt: WHAT: Mitch Zeller, director of the Center for Tobacco Products at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will speak one-on-one with Legacy CEO and President Robin Koval about the Center's vision for the regulation of tobacco products to help reduce the death and disease caused by tobacco use. The FDA Center for Tobacco Products is responsible for implementing the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which Congress passed and the President signed into law in June 2009. This law gives the FDA broad authority to regulate the manufacture, marketing, and distribution of tobacco products to protect public health. The initial grant of authority covered cigarettes, roll-your-own, and smokeless tobacco products. In April 2014, the FDA proposed extending its authority to cover additional products that meet the definition of a tobacco product under the proposed rule: Tobacco Products Deemed to Be Subject to the Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act. Once the proposed rule becomes final, FDA will be able to use powerful regulatory tools, such as age restrictions and rigorous scientific review of new tobacco products and claims to reduce tobacco-related disease and death.
