Abstrakt: Reports on the results of the federal government's latest round of nationwide achievement tests in the United States. Conclusion that although there has been progress in math, average reading scores barely budged for fourth graders who took part earlier this year in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, widely considered to be the best test measuring national achievement in core subjects; Reference to the fact that overall reading results have changed little since 1991 and that more than a third of fourth graders continue to test at below basic levels; Signs that state and federal education initiative have yet to produce nationwide progress in reading; Observation that boosting reading scores is not likely to get easier, given the rapidly changing demographics in the nation's schools where, for many children, English is a second language; Divisions in the philosophy of how reading should be taught.
