Governor Chris Sununu has approved a two-year, $250,000 pilot program in New Hampshire that encourages selected schools to purchase local food. The program, established by House Bill 1678, will reimburse schools for certain foods that are sourced from New Hampshire, including meats, fruits, vegetables, cider, and maple syrup. The Department of Agriculture, Markets, and Food will oversee the program and choose one school from each of the state's 10 counties, with a second school from the same area being chosen if not all counties apply. Only schools participating in the National School Lunch Program are eligible, and the selected schools should represent a variety of sizes, locations, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
