The Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed an appeal by the federal government, allowing two class action lawsuits against the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to proceed. The first lawsuit, brought by Joe David Nasogaluak, alleges that the RCMP frequently arrest, detain, and abuse Indigenous people in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon. The second lawsuit, brought by Shirley Meguinis Martin and Edie Joseph, covers RCMP abuse against Indigenous peoples in the rest of Canada. Both lawsuits claim breach of Sections 7 and 15 Charter rights. The lawsuits seek financial compensation and aim to bring about systemic change within the RCMP. [Extracted from the article] |
