ANYONE who loved The Big Lebowski is going to find enjoyable echoes of Jeff Bridges's legendary slacker The Dude in Darren 'DB' Barrenman (the Star Trek movies' Chris Pine), a bearded, long-haired layabout with a failing poolcleaning business and a selection of quirky friends and neighbours at his run-down apartment complex. When he's approached by a mystery woman (DeWanda Wise) who's looking for help to investigate a corrupt LA councilman, he sets out on an odyssey through the underbelly of the City of Angels in search of answers. Or possibly just a bit of peace and quiet. Sweet and charming, Pine's directorial debut wears its huge heart on its sleeve as it fills an engagingly bumbling detective tale with an array of character actors - including Danny DeVito, Annette Bening (pictured with Wise and Pine), Jennifer Jason Leigh, Clancy Brown and John Ortiz - so effortlessly brilliant that you can't help loving spending time with them.
