Abstrakt: QUESTION Did gladiators have safety rules and regulations? GLADIATORIAL contests (munera) were extremely danger-? ous but were not usually fights to the death. Historians believe that about one in ten bouts ended in a fatality. These were ritualistic bat-? tles between highly trained fight-? ers and the key was to give the crowd a worthy battle. Since gladiators were expensive to house, feed and train, their owners were loath to see them needlessly killed. There were rules of engagement (the lex pugnandi) and referees (summa rudis) on hand to enforce bouts. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
