The article focuses on the U.S. financial services agenda which is expected to involve continued bipartisan cooperation on many issues, regardless of which party controls the U.S. Senate or the House in 2005. Nevertheless, a Democratic majority in either chamber likely would place greater emphasis on consumer protections and call for more aggressive oversight of the banking regulatory agencies. Stakeholders also have predicted that if Senate Banking ranking member Paul Sarbanes, and House Financial Services ranking member Barney Frank, become chairmen of their respective committees, they would take a different approach than the Republicans on the housing government sponsored enterprises, certain regulatory exemption issues and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency's contentious state pre-emption rule. |
