The article reports on the emergence of chaos in Catalonia, Spain's defiant attempt to stage an independence referendum with hundreds injured in clashes with police in one of the gravest tests of democracy in the country since the end of Prime Minister Francisco Franco dictatorship in the 1970s. According to Catalan officials, more than 750 people were injured in the crackdown. Meanwhile, the government of Madrid had declared the referendum unconstitutional and ordered the vote suspended. |
