World BARGOU 08 Targ (Glitterbeat Records) A BREATHY flute, thrashed out rhythms on a drum and an urgent lonesome voice. Part of the urgency, it turns out, is for singer Nidhal Yahyaoui to put the music of Bargou, a forgotten valley in northern Tunisia, on the map. The singing, in a mixture of Berber and Arabic, seems at first hearing too minimal and raw, but then its trance-like power starts to take hold. Producer and keyboard player Sofyann Ben Youssef adds low growling basslines and electronic effects on Moog synthesizer, which gives this essentially traditional music a contemporary edge.
