ASTANA. Aug 20 (Interfax) – After months of speculation and pressure on its currency, Kazakhstan has announced a free-floating exchange rate for the tenge, starting August 20. The move saw the currency slide over a quarter against the dollar, dropping 66.88 tenge for a weighted average exchange rate of 255.26 tenge/$1 in trading on the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange (KASE). Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev called the move a 'forced measure' after the National Bank spent $28 billion on maintaining the former rate. The country's small- and medium-sized businesses and exporters hope to gain competitiveness from the decision, while the country's government will reduce spending and does not plan to borrow money on foreign capital markets next year.
