Studies the diurnal characteristics of heavy precipitation events in southern Scotland according to synoptic weather type. Role of cluster analysis in dividing the weather types into five groups according to the overall diurnal distribution of precipitation; Results suggesting that early-morning peak-over-threshold events (POT) may be caused mainly by warm fronts; How this is consistent with warm fronts providing favourable conditions for orographic enhancement, which occurs predominantly during the early morning; Data indicating 24 hour POTs were found to start significantly more often in the first four hours after midnight than during the rest of the day. |
