Highlights: [•] We reconstruct the history of western spruce budworm in southern British Columbia, Canada. [•] We found that since the 1500s, outbreaks have been periodic, with a mean return interval of 28 years. [•] Outbreaks were generally spatially synchronous within the study area. [•] The number of outbreaks per century since the 1800s was 3–4 per century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
