Looks at misconduct in scientific research and its repercussions for science. Question of how to decide whether research has been conducted carelessly or fraudulently; Case of Margot O'Toole, an independent researcher who discovered questionable data from her superiors; Public scrutiny of misconduct and fraud in science in Congressional hearings in April 1988, in which two different House of Representatives subcommittees held hearings from whistleblowers, statesmen, and observers of science, and National Institutes of Health (NIH) officials responsible for formal oversight and regulation of research; The public credibility of the scientific honor system and its ability to distinguish between fraud and error; Public interest in biomedicine, in which misrepresentation of efficacy of an experimental drug is more pertinent to the public interest than other scientific speculation. |
