Abstrakt:	The article discusses risky state of rivers in Murray-Darling Basin due to over-extraction of water for consumption and the potential risk associated to ecosystem health across the Basin. It highlights the enactment of Water Act 2007 by the Australian government in this regard and describes the objects of the Act. It examines the nature of the obligations contained in several international environmental agreements including the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Ramsar Convention.
