Ethiopia has long been associated primarily with famine. Experts andacademia have suggested a number of reasons for famine. Some are natural and others socio-economic and political. The aim of this study was to investigate the views of educators on the forces behind famine in Ethiopia in light of the dominant view held by experts and academia. A questionnaire was administered and the results indicated a remarkable difference in the views of educators and academia on some important issues, though they agreed on many of the factors. Contrary to academia, educators seemed, for instance, to downplay the role of certain socio-economic and political factors and put a greater emphasis on natural forces. The implications of the results for strategies to attain sustainable self-sufficiency in food are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
