Abstrakt: The article discusses efforts by conservationists, ranchers and American Indians to stop a strip mining operation in the Powder River Basin that would destroy pristine prairies in Montana. Topics include an ecological and historical overview of Powder River Basin, such as its wildlife and Indian antiquities, Arch Coal Inc.'s leases on more than 1.3 billion tons of coal in Powder River Basin's Otter Creek Valley, and the ecological risks of stripping mining. Also discussed is the environmental degradation caused by coal-fired power plants, such as Pennsylvania Power and Light's (PPL's) plant in Colstrip, Montana, and the tactics used by several groups to prevent coal mining in Otter Creek Valley.
