Sediment cores (16) from the Inner Oslofjord were analyzed for PCB's and DDT. Although localized high content of PCB's is observed, the data show even distribution of these compound - a consequence of removal by particulate and detrital matter and the sedimentation of this material. Significant modification of the profiles of PCB's in the sedimentary column together with fractionation of the PCB's according to their chlorine content are observed. The extent of these changes is shown to be related to the physico-chemical conditions in the sediments and hence the extent of biological mediation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
