Abstrakt: The article discusses regional legal interventions for environmental conservation that acknowledge the connection between poverty reduction and environmental protection in Africa. It states that poverty is identified by the Environmental Action Plan of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPADEAP) as the main consequence and cause of man-made environmental degradation in the continent. It notes that the continent's effort to conserve the environment is anthropocentric since African leaders believe that environmental protection must contribute to the total socio-economic development of the people. However, it says that although the leaders recognise the significance of environmental protection to socio-economic development, their enforcement of the interventions is lukewarm.
