Abstrakt: The article focuses on the review of the efficiency of phosphorus (P) retention in riparian buffers. A review on the four conceptual hydrological pathways for P losses and preservation in riparian buffers is shown including the diffuse flow path through riparian formation, overland flow path, riparian buffer irrigation, and riparian buffer outpour. It examines various hydrological flow paths and its effect to P retention mechanisms and how it determines the interaction of P compounds with iron and aluminum oxides that makes up a riparian buffer. It mentions sedimentation as the main process responsible for the preservation of P in riparian buffers. Meanwhile, further study is needed since there is lack of information on the mechanisms in charge for the P retention in fixed soils.
