This article describes how the study of the behavior of narwhals may help scientists to understand and to track temperature changes in inaccessible parts of the ocean. Narwhals are the most zone-restricted and northernmost whales and are particularly susceptible to global warming and changes in ocean temperatures. Narwhals offer a unique opportunity for study because of the strict migratory habits and their restriction to a particular area for their lives. The difficulty in studying such animals results from the expense of mounting expeditions in the extreme conditions of the Arctic seas. |
