Abstrakt: Despite the lack of waste separation policies in Iran, many households are strongly involved in separation at source (SAS) of waste in parts of the country. This article investigates SAS of household waste in Tehran. A number of 370 households living in low, middle and high socio-economic strata zones of the city were interviewed for this research. Through the questionnaire, the demographic data of our sample were obtained and other information such as household size, recycling information through media programmes and availability of SAS facilities and services were registered. Religious beliefs for waste segregation and motivation for participation in SAS programmes were also investigated. The results reveal a weak link between demographic characteristics and SAS practices. However religious beliefs and willingness for participation in SAS programmes influence household waste separation practices. Moreover municipal facilities and services were significantly associated with the intensity of household SAS practices while available media programs were not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
