Abstrakt: The article cites a study which reveals the impact of occupant behavior on residential energy use in the U.S. The study measured energy use in 10 identical Habitat for Humanity all-electric homes and examined 11 very similar solar homes built under the Sacramento Utility District (SMUD) Solar Homes program. It shows that the most frugal home had a negative utility cost, while the highest-consuming solar home used nearly twice as much as the average nonsolar home. It concludes that interest and motivation play a vital role in defining whether having an energy monitor actually lowers energy use.
