Abstrakt: The article focuses on a study which investigated the effects of weightlessness on the nuclear or cellular division of the amoeba, Pelomyxa carolinensis. A three-compartment chamber was selected for the experiment since it is necessary to feed and fix the amoebae during weightlessness. Upon delivery of the flight chambers at Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii, starved amoebae and fed amoebae were sub-cultured in separate dishes and amply fed for growth rate studies. The starved amoebae showed no evidence of division during flight. The study also found no significant difference in the rate of reproduction between the live fed flight amoebae and the controls.
