Abstrakt: This article discusses the leaching of the pesticide atrazine and its degradates in the shallow groundwater of southeastern Florida. According to the authors, fields of sweet corn have hydrologic conditions with a potential for shallow groundwater contamination. They found that planting a cover crop like Sunn Hemp during the summer and then turning and chopping crop residues into the soil significantly reduces atrazine leaching. The results demonstrate a small but significance risk for groundwater contamination by leaching of atrazine in south Florida.
