Abstrakt: The article offers a report relating to materials and techniques used for Spanish Renaissance panel painting. The section provides a technical examination of a Spanish altarpiece ascribed to Bartolomé Bermejo, belonging to the Hispanic Society of America. Among of the analytical methods used in the study includes x-radiography, infrared reflectography, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cross-section staining tests, gas chromatography, and carbon-14 dating. Several techniques used in the painting, identified in the study were: the use of cotton and flax fibers for internal strength in the halo relief, the use of an orange-colored oil mordant under the gilding, the use of powdered gold over the entire gilded surface and the use of an egg-white binding medium.
