The article reports on the development done by researchers at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida as they are prepairing for the possibility of anthrax attacks. It includes developing a new technique that can produce anthrax vaccines. According to Stephen Leppla, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, anthrax bacteria that do not have protective antigen (PA) cannot cause an infection. Obtaining large quantities of PA has been a problem and only one company is licensed by the Food and Drug Administration to produce the vaccine in the U.S. which is BioPort. The idea of putting vaccines in plants or fruits started in 1992 by Charles Arntzen, codirector of the Center for Infectious Disease and Vaccinology at Arizona State University. |
