Abstrakt: This article focuses on the challenges surrounding the adoption of transdisciplinary technology of living roof in the U.S. The technology of living roofs which has made an entry into North America includes a wide range of products, like intensive rooftop gardens and roofing systems. Being a transdisciplinary technology, which requires cooperation between different sectors of society to meet complex developmental challenges, living roof faces several challenges in its adoption and promotion, which include coordination of interdisciplinary research, transdisciplinary communication, quantification of location-specific ecosystem benefits, and translation of public benefits into incentives for developers or users. Several North American cities are putting an effort to popularize living roofs as a green building strategy to address an array of problems such as urban heat island effects and stormwater management. However, the construction costs of living roofs are costlier that other conventional roofs.
