This article analyzes population growth and migration, urbanization and their impacts on environmental condition of the urban areas of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. The urban settlements of the Kathmandu Valley are one of the oldest human settlements in Asia. The valley is a legendary for its arts and culture, as well as for its agricultural land. The art and culture however have been threatened because of losing of their original traditional arts and culture. Within five decades, the urban areas in the valley grew by nearly 279% encroaching upon prime agricultural land, public land, riverbank. and forestland. During these years, the forest and the agriculture lands decreased by 29% and 13% respectively. The urban population grew by almost 500% between 1952 and 2001, in which migration was assumed to contribute 113%. |
