Abstrakt: Geographical Indication (GI) is a form of intellectual property that provides legal protection to products originating from a specific geographical area, emphasizing the unique qualities, reputation, and traditional production methods associated with those products. This review explores the significance of GI in the context of agricultural products, focusing on its role in promoting economic development, preserving cultural heritage, ensuring product quality and fostering sustainable agriculture practices. The review begins by examining the conceptual framework of GI and its evolution as a valuable tool for rural development. It highlights the economic benefits that GI protection offers to farmers and local communities, creating incentives for the preservation of traditional agricultural practices and fostering a sense of pride and identity among producers. Furthermore, the review delivers cultural importance of GI, emphasizing its role in safeguarding and promoting the rich diversity of agricultural heritage. It discusses how GI protection contributes to the preservation of unique farming traditions, indigenous knowledge, and biodiversity, thereby preventing the homogenization of agricultural landscapes. Additionally, this review discusses the potential of GI to encourage sustainable agriculture. By promoting local and traditional farming practices, GI protection can contribute to environmental conservation and the development of ecologically sustainable agricultural systems. In conclusion, this review underscores the multifaceted importance of GI for agricultural products. It provides insights into the economic, cultural, and environmental dimensions of GI protection, highlighting its role as a catalyst for rural development, cultural preservation, quality assurance, and sustainable agriculture. Understanding and appreciating the significance of GI is essential for policymakers, farmers, consumers, and other stakeholders involved in the agricultural value chain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
