Abstrakt: This article provides an overview of the history of flooding in Houston, Texas, and the city's efforts to address the issue. The author shares their personal experience of a major flood and the resulting damage. The article discusses the construction of reservoirs and the straightening and paving of bayous as measures taken by the city, but notes that these attempts have not been successful. The author argues that the natural function of bayous is to hold and distribute water, and that paving them hinders proper absorption and drainage. The article also explores the impact of urban development on the city's bayous and highlights the efforts of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department to create flood capacity in parks along the bayous, which also benefits habitat restoration. The author emphasizes the need for a better understanding of the role of flooding in bayou ecosystems and a healthier relationship with water. [Extracted from the article]
