Abstrakt: The article explores the problems caused by the thawing of permafrost that releases mercury and industrial pollutants into Arctic communities. It describes the process of permafrost thaw and the threats posed to traditional food sources, drinking water and health by the contaminants released when the permafrost that once encapsulated them thaws. It discusses the results of a study that documented the extent of contaminated sites in the Arctic that will thaw by the end of the 21st century.
